“Go therefore and make disciples of all nations.” One sentence, and the followers of a man with no school built the school system of a civilization — first cathedral and monastery schools, then the universities themselves: Bologna, Paris, Oxford, Cambridge, and across the ocean, Harvard with ministry in its founding charter.

The honest objection is on every card: other civilizations had places of learning long before. What the church added was the institution that grants degrees, governs itself, and outlives its founders — the university that spread worldwide. And under it all runs the drive that made ordinary people want to read: the Book.
