ENGLISH STANDARD VERSION (ESV)

“What therefore God has joined together, let not man separate.””

— Jesus · Mark 10:9
MED-HIGH · EVIDENCE GRADE

Consent, fidelity, and the child as a person — ethics that wove themselves into Western law and custom.

Two of the quietest revolutions in history were argued from a wedding. Marriage as the consent of two people — not a deal arranged between families — and a sexual ethic that bound husbands exactly as it bound wives: both were strange in the ancient world, and both passed into the law and expectations we now assume are simply human.

The field is graded medium-high because the practice lagged the preaching for centuries, and the objection on each card says so. But the taproot of the ideal is not in Greece or Rome. It is in the Gospels.
