Homer's journey changed its hero's location; Dante's changed his soul. That difference — the road that redeems the traveler — entered the water supply of Western fiction through two Christian poems and never left. Every redemption arc you have ever watched on a screen descends from it.
EVIDENCE VS. COUNTERFACTUAL
This label distinguishes a factual historical record from the interpretation built around it. A well-documented event or influence pathway does not prove that no alternative history could produce a similar result. Grade note: the historical record and pathway are especially well established
STRONGEST OBJECTION(S)
The Odyssey got there first as a journey; the Christian addition is the moral arc — the road that changes the traveler.
The causal chain — tap (i) for detail
01A soul's road mapped as a story Dante presents a journey through the afterlife as a transformation of understanding and desire, not merely a change of scenery. Christian accounts of judgment, purification and blessedness shape the destinations and the traveller's learning. This gave later readers a large and memorable example of spiritual development expressed through the structure of a journey.
02Bunyan's allegory a centuries-long bestseller Bunyan makes a pilgrim's hazards and companions embody spiritual struggles in an accessible narrative. Christian's progress turns doctrine into encounters a reader can follow and remember. The work's long circulation helped transmit that form of storytelling across generations, although its reception varied among religious communities, languages and reading publics.
03The arc absorbed into secular fiction Later fiction can adapt the journey from failure toward renewal while changing or removing its explicit theology. Comparisons with Dante and Bunyan can illuminate particular works when supported by reception or textual evidence. They do not establish that every redemption story descends from these books; journeys and moral transformation also have other literary histories.PRESENT DAY
